Helioviewer.org 2.3.0 Released

A new version of Helioviewer.org has been released including better movie customization, support for embedding Helioviewer.org in remote sites, and a number of performance and bug fixes.

Screenshot showing new movie settings added in Helioviewer.org 2.3.0.

Support has been added for embedding Helioviewer.org into third-party websites, and JSONP support makes it easier for new versions of the front-end to be created which interact with the main Helioviewer.org back-end. Similarly, the front-end has been rewritten to allow for easier creation of custom front-end clients without having to re-implement a tiling system, etc.

New configuration options added in Helioviewer.org 2.3.0.

The back-end movie queuing system has been ported from Ruby to PHP to allow for better integration with the rest of the back-end, and the movies table structure has been modified for improved time estimation and similarity searching. Additional options (frame-rate and movie length) are offered to allow users further control over the movies they create and the duration option has been moved to a more obvious location.

The new version won’t update the image, seems stuck on 2012/04/01 01:31:44 for the last two days…

    • #2 by keith on April 3, 2012 - 6:51 pm

      Hi Allen,

Unfortunately the lack of new data is related to an issue with the source of our images, and not the updates to the Helioviewer.org. See the recent post about AIA data lag for more information about what is going on.

Hopefully things will be back to normal in the next couple days.

Excellent ! I come back whit my suggestion ;) If it was possible to have a “smoother zoom” instead of 9 steps zoom !
Thanks for your great work !

      Hi Geoff,

You are absolutely right — Helioviewer.org is a web page, while JHelioviewer is a downloadable application. Both of them access the same images, but have slightly different interfaces and focuses.

You should automatically receive the latest version of Helioviewer.org when you visit the webpage. To make sure your browser is fetching the most recent version, click on the “about” link at the very bottom of the page. In the dialog that pops up the version should be listed as “2.3.0″.

    • #11 by keith on April 23, 2012 - 3:29 pm

I’m glad you enjoy the site!

Unfortunately there is no way at the moment to have the videos loop. Perhaps we can add that in the future though!

  8. #12 by geoff on April 23, 2012 - 3:04 pm

oh yes i am running 2.3 :)_ i was also wondering is there any way you can save the clips other than the movie history. thanks.

    • #13 by keith on April 23, 2012 - 3:31 pm

You can also save the movies to your computer. When the video is playing, click on the green arrow button just below the movie to download the video to your computer. Is that what you were looking for? Or something else?

  9. #14 by geoff on April 23, 2012 - 3:08 pm

i noticed recently that sdo seemed to bounce around a bit do you know what caused that?

    • #15 by keith on April 23, 2012 - 3:32 pm

Occasionally SDO goes through some calibration steps in order to ensure that it is still pointing in the correct direction, etc. During that calibration (which occurs about once a week I believe), the videos may appear shaky.

  11. #17 by keith on April 25, 2012 - 2:14 pm

    Hi Geoff,

Not at the moment, although you may be able to generate something similar in JHelioviewer — JHelioviewer allows the user to change the colormaps associated with each layer.

    Hi keith
That version you emaild me seems to work ok, whats the difference?
    thanks again

    • #24 by keith on April 30, 2012 - 5:13 pm

Geoff, only the URL is different. The only thing that is different is your cache associated with each different URL. If you have the chance to follow the instructions in the email I sent you and send me the output, that would be very helpful in diagnosing the problem.

    H i agian keith
i was wondering in jhelioviewer could you please alaberate what the time step setting dose

    • #27 by keith on April 30, 2012 - 5:25 pm

      Do you mean in Helioviewer.org?

The time-step option let’s you specify a time duration to skip forward/backward when pressing the arrow buttons.. E.g. if the time-step is “3 hours” and you press the left-arrow button, the observation time will change to 3 hours before the current time.

  18. #28 by geoff on April 29, 2012 - 7:32 pm

i was wondering is there any way of increasing
    the 700 frames jheoioviewer

    • #29 by keith on April 30, 2012 - 5:26 pm

I’ve increased the limit to 1000 frames for now. In order to enable as many users as possible to access Helioviewer.org and JHelioviewer I cannot set it too much higher, and the limit may need to be lowered again in the future as traffic increases. Hope this helps!

  19. #30 by geoff on May 1, 2012 - 8:44 pm

thanks for the extra 300 frames’
    love it
